Didn't need you to begin with. [she's not angry - tense. this tower of sand looks unstable, and Alan has his leg - which she'd never think about as an obstacle usually, except what if he has to run down the stairs if this thing collapses? - and she has taken the taking initiative bit far too seriously.

[he can be privvy to some very awkward noises of stairs being climbed, and the occasional inhale when nearing a dangerous looking step. and then a sharper one-]

[ Yes, Mae, that and the pervading dead reek should tell you that maybe Alan had a point in saying you should keep out. ]

Come straight through, then--I'm not far from the -rs.

[ And he goes to meet her halfway, sand gritting underfoot and a hand half-pressed to his mouth. The ticking recedes as he approaches--but not as much as it should, maybe. ]

[She follows his instructions - straight through until she spots the familiar sight. Her hand's pressed to her mouth, and her eyes keep going over every detail - it's fascinating, a sand tower where there was just a tower before. And creepy. It's so creepy.]

Alan - [Found.] Can we get out before we become like...that?

We will.

[ His tone's confident--lying? But then, being suspect's not a new problem. He meets her eyes. ]

But you've seen it for yourself--the stairs are holding and the doors are open. Mae, you don't have to be here.

I know. [Maybe she was interested too, a little bit curious. Not that Alan's her excuse to get herself in danger, not at all. She keeps her eyes on his.]

Much as I've always wanted my very own bellringer...

[ Lips quirking to take the sting out of the obviously impending rejection. He heads inward, steps careful on sand--and a tad slower. ]

I'd feel better if I didn't risk both of us. And I do know how to watch out.
