(And I'd never heard the term "gaslamp fantasy" before, but I really like it. Because I always did wonder where the "punk" was in "steampunk" fantasy.)
Hey! When I reverse-inherited Metherion's laptop, "Girl Genius" was one of the preset tabs. I'm ashamed to admit I didn't follow up on it. Obviously I should rethink that. I like the term "gaslamp fantasy," too (as well as the genre). I think the first steampunk work I read was The Difference Engine, so the original descriptor seemed natural, but I would agree that it really doesn't fit a lot of the works that belong in the category.
