(I am entirely unabashed about my terrible influence. XD)
In other news, ffffffffffffffffffffffff -- if you find some good refs on colonial Sydney and/or black sailors, I demand you forward me the details. Just what I need, too! :DD (Speaking of, I can't remember exactly the breadth and depth of the focus on early Sydney, per se [and I haven't got my copy with me to check], but if you can get your hands on Ian Hoskins' Sydney Harbour: A History [UNSW Press, 2009], I remember it being a pretty sweet overview of the waterfront and the development of Sydney. It also had a great chapter on the Aboriginal population before European settlement [and good coverage of them after settlement, as well], which I wholeheartedly encourage you to research if you're going to even think about writing about Sydney. :D)
Shall do, if I ever find them! There are a few autobiographies - eg. Olaudah Equiano was a captain's slave for a time, and acted as a powder monkey on his ship - so I shall be trying to get hold of them. But as for secondary sources, most of my AOS books do have some information, but so far the only books I've found that are specifically about black sailors are focused on American maritime history. Still worth chasing up, I'm sure, but I need some Royal Navy-specific sources! D8 I notice Channel 4 has a documentary about black sailors at Trafalgar, but it doesn't seem to be on 4OD at the moment. (angst, woe!) DX
Aaaah, thanks for the rec! 8D And it's available on Amazon UK, too! Bit pricey (for my limited means, anyway), but still. *takes note of it* Trying not to get too suckered in to any heavy-duty research on the subject, at least not till I've made some headway on, y'know, the first book (XD), but some casual Googling and going back to your awesome photo-tour is satisfying my appetite for now. I've been
