Things You Shouldn't Post On A Saturday Night (because no one will read)

Writing is an art form.

The art, for me, lies in the construction of a sentence, the rhythm to it, the images the words evoke, that careful choice between one word and another that a writer makes every time they create a paragraph.

Transformative writing is a different art form.

I was reading Anthony Horowitz's Sherlock Holmes and the House ( Read more... )

spread the love, meta, writing, hello there sherlock, pages + print = book, because vera is insane, contro-ver-sy, plotting world domination, mystery that is fandom, my ianto-ness is awesome, thoughts 1:writing, me and my opinions

I don't often reply to long thinky posts like this because, for all that I claim to be a writer, I'm pretty terrible with words 95% of the time. But this ended up being a beautiful post that really resonated with me in all kinds of ways, and I just thought you should know. ♥

Thank you very much! I think all writers hate their own work to some degree, so don't feel too bad.

You've hit the nail on the head here, by articulating this shared love. This community based on love. I've often described fandom academically (and to outsiders who are interested in my obsessions) as a desire towards the text, as interaction with the text and other "readers" simultaneously.

I think your simple "love" is a much clearer and easier way of communicating what being fannish and creating fannish and transformative art is all about.

I've been thinking about what makes fandom different, what makes us a community when all we start with is drooling over the same actor. But building on that, we use it as a springboard... it's an unfinished thought, still, because I don't think there is one answer and the answer also changes, but yeah. "Desire towards the text" is a good phrase, too, it does describe the desire towards something fictional, but yeah, it doesn't encompass the other readers and the act of sharing as easily.

Thank you :)

Hi,as someone who's recently got back into writing, this post really resonates and inspires me to write well and to write better. You really make a lot of sense when you say:

'tell me why you love someone. Make that the story you write. Show me who they are and ground that in their mannerisms, their speech, their actions [...]Learn to understand the characters and see their beauty and help me see it.'

I know I will have that quote in the back of my mind when writing my own fic from now on, so thank you for such a beautiful post

This is perfect and totally accurate/correct/just plain right. When you really get into it, you get such a buzz from interacting with fictional characters.

Yes. The moment I make it work, I get the lines right and they just roll, that's the moment everything comes together and it's like a high, yes.

You're very welcome, and thanks for asking about this. I might not have written it otherwise.
