I really have no intelligent commentary for this episode and I'm totally okay with that. I was basically reduced to incoherent flailing and sobbing by the end, especially when Danny told Grace it was "the best day." That collision of tragedy and joy was very powerful.
And yeah, the Catherine bit irritated me too. It was like the opening sequence of a frat house movie.
There's no real way to be coherent, to be honest. Just no way. Danny's story intertwining personal tragedy and terrorism and death and hope was ... gah. And Steve having to hold back the tears and the nervous post-trauma giggles. Just, this. This is how the show should always be.
(I know you know I agree with the Cath thing. Oy, show. I also would have loved for Grace-the-partner to have been given some lines during the beating scene, at least. I'll chalk that one up to them being very young - Danny was what, 24 or 25 then? That's so young, really.)
There's so much in this; I feel incompetent in not being able to talk about it, but it's just so perfect! The way they handled it all was just so, so beautiful.
(I know, yes. And ditto on Grace-the-partner. My god, they were young, yes. Oh man.)
OK, I preface this by saying that I loved the personal and relationship parts of this episode. The lack of Steve's mom, and the massive amount of Grace made me happy AND I honestly loved seeing Danny as a young cop
( ... )
I can't comment on the NY/NJ police, etc., but I do know that the writer of the ep has close personal connections to the region and lived there at the time. So, our mileage varies, undoubtedly, I'm not American, etc., but yours and Lenkov's doesn't vary that much.
Honestly? I see Danny and Grace going off script to such disastrous results a direct link to why Danny was very, very "there are rules" with Steve when they first began their partnership, why he was so buttoned up. And it was also why he relaxed very easily into the more unorthodox manner of dealing with things ala Five-0.
The timing, yeah, problematic and I respect your feeling like it cheapened things - but for me it was another layer being lain, of the house that is Danny.
I agree with you about how this reinforces Danny's insistence on procedure and waiting for back up.
The timing could be problematic - but as someone who has never even been on the same continent, I had no idea where they were. I just knew New Jersey was "next door" to New York and therefore the whole thing was fine for me.
Mind you, if they'd set something in my home town and stuffed it around like that, I'd be really pissed off.

It was so unnecessary. Cath was great in this ep, I really love her sass, why did they have to be so stupid about it?
