Is there still a part of you that wants to live?

For anyone who - like me - is forced to use Windows 8/8.1, but hates lots of the non-negotiable features, I commend to you Winaero. From them, you can download two lightweight programs which:

Killer. V good. It's replaced the last earworm (did you know that washing machines last longer with Calgon?) and at the moment is less annoying than that or the one that preceded it (The Animals Went In Two By Two, Hoorah! Hoorah!).

Useful to have tweaks! Note the taskbar previews are a Windows 7 (or possibly Windows Vista) introduction. I found quite a lot of difference upgrading from XP to 7 (e.g., locating all the settings in the control panel).

I'm not a fan of Mac-style-candy. Though I think 8 is a bit more minimalist than 7 in that they've dropped the see-through appearance for windows.

I switched from XP to 7 quite late in the day (skipping Vista), then changed jobs and had to switch to 8 fairly soon after. Now you mention it yes, the little preview windows were an annoyance that came in with 7.

I thought 8 came with all that see-through nonsense too - just that 7 had taught me how to turn it all off! My windows are all satisfactorily opaque, now, and nothing animates when it could just snap. It's very restful :)
