I'm a bit late ( of course, as a lot of the times here ) but I just wanted to say that I think you've made the right choice.

About that gun, i can understand why your mom is a bit afraid of the fact that he has a gun. To be honest , I never understood why people would want to have a gun ( in Holland it's illegal to have one, I know in America itá a whole other story )
In short, just be a bit carefull, you never know. The guy is depressed, you said it yourself, and you never know what depressed people can do....
Not to scare you but, well, you know I just want you to be save... ( shit I sound like your mom =D )
