The Number You Have Called …
She slipped away from the others, from their grief, and headed to the locker room for some privacy. Her whole body felt chilled to the bone, her mind blank, her emotions numb.
The disbelief, the rage, the grief in the lab was overwhelming, but Lindsay felt curiously removed from it. No one had looked to her for a reaction. No one imagined that she should react to this in an emotional fashion. And she didn’t. She listened to the grief-stricken words of her coworkers, saw the stunned rage on their faces but she said nothing, felt nothing.
They were all jumping to conclusions. It was ridiculous to think that the woman they had found was Aiden. Just because the appearances were similar … just because she hadn’t seen Aiden since last night … just because Aiden wasn’t answering her phone …
Lindsay leaned against the cool metal of her locker, suddenly needing the support for some reason. She fumbled with her cell phone, checking her messages again.
“You have no new messages.”
She would find out who that woman in the morgue really was. She would find the perp who had killed this woman. She would go and drink a toast to that woman’s memory with the team. Then she would go home and she would yell at Aiden for not answering her phone and making her worry and Aiden would apologise and Lindsay would try to stay mad, but Aiden would pout and Lindsay would cave in and they would laugh and Aiden would pull her down onto the couch and they would wrestle and laugh and kiss and then Lindsay would tell Aiden about her lousy day and it wouldn’t be so lousy anymore.
Lindsay pressed one on her speed dial again. And again. And again.
“The number you have called is unavailable at this time.”
