I Like This One
Lindsay had offered to help, but it was Aiden who was helping her grandmother with the washing up today, although Lindsay’s offers of help had been accepted with pleasure on previous occasions. But this time Angelina had said without room for argument that Aiden was going to help and her grandsons could pretend that they had a few social graces and entertain Lindsay for half an hour. This hadn’t presented much of a challenge, although it might not have been said to have shown them at their most polite, as the men had discovered Lindsay’s liking for football and they were now arguing the merits of various teams with great enthusiasm.
“I like this one, Aiden.”
Aiden tried to hide a smile. She’d known precisely why Nonna had insisted she help with the dishes (as had her brothers, judging by their grins). Subtlety was not a well-known word in their family. This wasn’t the first time they’d talked about Lindsay, but while Angelina had been cautiously approving, she had been reserving final judgment. Judgment had now been made, apparently.
“I like her very much. She’s strong, she’s smart and she’s not so much of a soft touch as you.”
“Nonna!” Aiden started to protest, although whether to the implications towards Lindsay’s character or her own, she wasn’t sure.
Angelina waved her to silence. “You are a soft touch, Aiden, for all you act tough. This one, she’s got a sweetness to her, enough to be kind, enough to understand you, but she’s harder than you. Now, I don’t know why that is, although what she’s said about her mama - or not said - gives me some ideas. She has a kind heart but she tries to hide it. And she’s not so quick to be nice to everybody. You need someone like that Aiden, someone who sees when you need protecting.”
“Nonna,” Aiden tried to protest again.
“You be quiet, Aiden Carmel, I’m still speaking. You need somebody to protect your heart because you won’t do it for yourself. And Lindsay, she needs somebody who’ll tell her that it’s okay to be kind, it’s okay to be vulnerable sometimes. She’s letting you in and I don’t think she does that too often. I like this one, Aiden. You be smart with her and you keep her happy, si?”
Angelina finished washing the last of the plates and handed it to Aiden, who was feeling rather stunned at this dissection of personalities. Angelina tried not to chuckle at her expression, instead narrowing her eyes in mock-impatience. “You going to stand there all night or you going to dry that plate?”
