This is a video I made for my_alternative's assignment for Miss Stacey's Summer School (crunchcandy's inspiring summer collaborative "school"). It's rough, but I did learn how to capture and edit video and audio on my mac...the world of visual/poetry/sound opens up!

I think this might be a tool for banishing my writers block...

poetry, art, writing

I really want to do more work next year along the video art route- recording my process, rather than the finished thing. I see great things ahead for us if we keep this up.

It would be great if even after the school is over we could keep giving each other assignments and deadlines. I realize that I work much better that way.

Absolutely incredible, perfect...
I'm such a fan of filming television screens, the scan lines and the hazed colours make me salivate so I really enjoyed watching this. I also loved your voice, and what an incredible poem. Really nice.

(I really should get round to uploading my own video and working on the other assignments, haha)

Thanks for inspiring me! I loved how you broke everything down so the technology wasn't that intimidating. I'm obsessed with filming the TV-- it's mesmerizing when abstracted.

I can't wait to see your video.

Oh, Ally, I love it! I think you really need to explore this avenue and watch some other feminist poetic filmmakers work. There's quite a bit of this Canada, but I don't know much about what's happening in the UK.

Hey, thanks! Do you have any names of artists working like this? I would like to check out more work.

Hmmmm.....well some of Miranda July's early work occupied this space.

There's Amanda Dawn Christie, Kirsten Sikora, Thirza Cuthand, Kika Thorne...dozens more that I'm not thinking of. The thing about this kind of work is that it's generally made in much the same way you made yours and therefore has little to no distribution. Generally a media art centre will have archives of all of the work that's been made there and will sometimes have compilations for festivals, etc. If there is a media art centre or film co-op near you I think you should go check it out and see if there's someone there you can speak to about seeing more work like yours, and also becoming a member. It's pretty exciting!

There was a place like that in SF called Artist's Television Access. I wonder if it's still there. There must be something like that in London but sometimes community based things in London are hard to find.

I will check out these artists you mention.

Where should I start with video capture? I want to insert a video clip from a DVD into a presentation. Any ideas gratefully received.

To make this I used the video capture on my digital camera. But you probably want the film segment straight from the DVD? You can edit video in iMovie if you have a mac, but you will have to see if the format from the DVD is import-able.

I got home from Comic-Con about an hour ago and am lying limply in bed drowsily catching up on livejournal; just watched "Lilith" and wanted to tell you -- it's so amazing and moving. There are better words to describe it but they are not in my head right now.
