I rated this book as five stars on Goodreads not so much on its artistry or its technical mastery, but simply because I personally found it such a delight to read. I can't promise anyone else will love it as much as I did. It mashed my buttons in all the right ways

It sounds like a great book! Putting it on my tbr-list now.

And yes, Mary Sue nowadays pretty much means generic insult to competent female character, so it's basically useless.

I had a whole lot of fun with it. I do think that some of my love is being influenced by other factors, such as the Mary Sue discussion going on, and the joy that is my ship written well, but I think it's still a solidly enjoyable YA book.
