So, lj is going to start requiring gender identification with new account creations, and they are removing the 'unspecified' option.

More info hereFuck this shit. I was always so happy that lj didn't try to force me to fit into the binary. But they want more ad revenue, so it's perfectly fine to fuck over the trans community ( Read more... )

Feedback left. My reasons aren't as personal, but I don't feel comfortable giving out my gender online, except among people I feel safe with.

That and I don't really want to be obliged to leave LiveJournal and have to chase all over the Internet to keep in touch with the people I like. -.-

There are a number of very valid reasons to not want to give out your gender on the internet. I think its good for lj to know that many different types of people won't be happy with this.

I really don't want to leave lj. I like it here, and I've carved out a bit of a place for myself. But I'm not sure if I can keep supporting them if they do this.

Wow. I'll leave feedback when I have access to a real computer, but thanks for linking.

Thank you!

Some people have received responses to their feedback and at the moment it appears that we won't be required to list a binary gender after all. Though the "Oh no, you've misunderstood! We never meant to do that!" response makes me mighty suspicious.

They just keep shooting themselves in the foot, don't they? >:/

I don't care to give out my identity online either (although it's fairly easy to tell from reading what I write).

At the moment it looks like we won't be required to list a binary gender after all. Livejournal is claiming that it was a mistake that was never intended to go live. How much you believe that, well...

D:! Fuckity, that's unbelievably insensitive. Yes, I'll just shove myself into an identity I'm not comfortable with and share it with the whole interwebs, because you need to be able to sell me shit more efficiently. Urgh.

Feedback sent, and if you have those Dreamwidth codes lying around, I'd love to have one, thank you. :)

Code sent!

It looks some people have been getting responses that say essentially "Um, oops! We didn't mean to do that!" I'm not certain I believe it, but at least it appears that we won't be forced to list a binary gender

That's a pretty good response. I'm not sure that I believe it was all just a mistake, but that's mainly based on past events. The most important thing is that it doesn't appear to be going through.
