I hate being me.

So, I run into this "rec" for Malt & Mockery, which comments that it's a "decent fic" but that both Tony and House are out of character in it. What happens? Naturally, because of this one sentence at some completely random website I'm now once again worried to death that I can't keep my characters in character. I actually agree with that opinion: ( Read more... )

Feh. "In character" is in the eye of the beholder, and I thought they were in character enough for the purposes of that story.

I mean, I'm one of the first people to say that "if your characters have to be out of character for your plot to work, then your plot doesn't work," but M&M didn't hit my OMGnooooWTF! button. I think it's fine, and I can't wait to read the new story.

So there.

Aww, thanks for the encouragement. :)

I guess I'm too quick to think that "in character" is an on/off thing, when more like a matter of opinion.

I also worry far too much, and don't write enough. Hm.

Any time we touch a character for fanfic or rping, they become out of character. Because we're not the original author. The trick is to match the character from the original source as possible... and sometimes people deviate so much that people go "AHH!! OOC!!" But technically.. we're all out of character. I read your first IM fic with House and I liked it, I thought you wrote the characters very well.

Hm, so, if we're talking about, say, a comic character, are they OOC in all the later comics, too, the ones that weren't written by the original author? I never thought about it that way, but I guess that's how it is - we're all just interpreting the characters the best we can.

And yesh, if my "first IM fic with House" means Iron & Irony, well, I feel pretty confident about everyone's in-characterness in that one, myself - a lot more than in M&M, at least. :)
