ideas for veg self-catering at a wedding?

Hey all! My partner and I are getting married in October, but unfortunately she was just laid off and I'm trying to find a way to bring costs down, so I'm tossing around the idea of self-catering the wedding. (Crazy! I know!)

As a former veg with a ton of veg friends and family, it's important that there be a satisfying, tasty veggie option, but I'm ( Read more... )

I know this may not be what you're aiming for.. but how about a veggie pot luck? this would take alot of pressure off you and there's so much to plan for in a wedding as it is

this way, you'd just possibly have to whip up some canapes with hummus/veg tapanade/cukes at most.

just a suggestion.

Yeah, a potluck is still floating around as an option-- I'll admit that I'm a bit paranoid after reading several accounts in which food poisoning ensued for all of the guests because of lax food-handling. Eek!

I'll probably calm down in a few days and reassess the cost and effort involved in each idea. Thanks for the thoughts!

Food poisoning is generally less likely with veggie food, but yeah could be an issue if you include meat. Good luck :)

True, and if I avoid having cheese/mayo-based stuff sitting out all day I'm sure it'll be fine. Thank you!

Bruschetta? That wouldn't be too time-consuming and it's always easy to make look lovely!

Great idea-- especially as an appetizer if I end up making Italian (pasta or lasagna)! Who doesn't love bruschetta?!

I'm having my civil partnership next month and we're having people round to our apartment and having a vegetarian pot luck - you could do the same wherever you have booked? It's great fun, cheap and less stressful :)

First-- congratulations on the upcoming nuptials!

Second-- please see above response. The potluck idea is still out there as an option. Thanks so much, and good luck!

Some of my college friends got married a few years back and had a super awesome burrito/taco bar at the reception. It was awesomely delicious.

I'm eating enchiladas right now, and every taste bud on my tongue was like, "GREAT IDEA. YES. DO IT."

I love Mexican food, as does the ladyfriend and all of our parents, but I might toss the idea around to a few other guests/family members since there are some people who don't like Mexican (which to me suggests a defective gene or something, but hey, it happens).

Great idea--Thanks!

My mom had a taco bar at hers, and kept the stuff warm in crock pots. You could also have a falafel bar.

Ah yes, crock pots! The poor man's flamey-heaty-warmy catering thing! That would definitely solve the issue of warming the food.

I must admit that I've never been a fan of falafel-- weird, because I'm not a picky eater and enjoy chickpeas... *shrug*

Thanks for the ideas!

If you like chickpeas maybe you would like a mock chicken salad like this http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=12429.0

I can imagine it being served on cute round little water crackers with a sprig of herb on top or a slice of cherry tomato for appetizers.

I've been making it a lot lately but I use plain greek or regular yogurt instead of nayonaise (I hate mayo) and whatever spices I like. Curry sometimes, garlic & italian spices sometimes, and sometimes the regular spices /accouterments used in tuna salad - dill, celery, etc.
