can anyone reccomend a substitution for fish sauce in a recipe?

I went to an Asian market and in the fish sauce aisle, they had a bottle labeled "Vegetarian Sauce". It's made from soy, but smells kind of stinky.

I usually see soy sauce subbed for fish sauce.

If you want a decent substitute, you'll need something potent--fish sauce has a strong smell and taste. I've made a decent veg version by using fermented tofu (need an Asian market for that, most likely) and a bit of soy sauce. I've read that also adding salted yellow beans makes it even "fishier", somehow.
