Eating out with omnis can be hard as a vegan. Way harder than as a vegetarian.

It really all depends on the sort of friends you have. I'm lucky with most. I actually went to someone's house last night, and they were ordering pizza. When I said I don't eat cheese he said "That's okay, I'll order half the vegetarian with no cheese. So I got to eat from the half half that was completely animal product free! And the others who ate some didn't complain at all.

The only comment that was made was "Who's lactose intolerant?" I just said "me" and didn't bother to correct them. I figure it makes them more likely to be willing to forgo dairy if they think it's an allergy.

Whenever I go to Applebees, I get the crispy orange chicken bowl, minus the chicken and sauce. It ends up being a bowl of rice and veggies, and is satisfying enough for me. You could ask about the sauce if you're interested, though since I've been told different things at different restaurants, I just omit it all the time.

I got a baked potato with a "steak topper" that consisted of seasoned sauteed mushrooms and onions in vegetable oil with a side of steamed broccoli

though you might ask to make sure that your restaurant does the vegetable oil instead of butter

And the commenter that said the restaurant wouldn't custom make should have walked out immediately. We are sitting down to a restaurant not a friggin fast food place where you know they can't change anything or take the time for it.
