New workout plan?

Dec 08, 2009 18:31

I am in the process of quitting Curves because I need a change and the ethics of the company are shitty anyway, and I can't take my 2 -3 times a week 6 mile walks anymore either cause it is getting too cold. What do you all do for workouts? I want to make sure I get the adequate cardio and strength training required for a woman. Thanks for the help ( Read more... )

Not sure this is exactly a vegan related question but I'll bite. Heh.

I'm going to move my running indoors onto a track for the duration of the MN winters. I also do the following: Jillian Michael's "30 Day Shred" and "Burn Fat, Boost Metabolism" circuit training DVDs, Tae Bo DVD, Hula dancing DVDs (I suck royally at it but it's fun!), Kettlenetics Kbell training, various strength training, ab work ...

When I'm not injured (I seem to be prone to lower body running injuries, boo hiss) I run 3X a week, two short runs of 4-5 miles and a long slow distance, building up to a 13 mile half marathon distance (I've got my first race in May). I'm at 9 miles now with 9.5 being my next long run. Running indoors on a track isn't going to be fun (boooooring... and it takes 16 laps to do one mile. Sob.) but it's my favorite form of cardio.

Check out the 30DS for sure. It's a really great workout, IMO, and I toned up a lot using it. The longer Burn Fat DVD is also great. Lots of jump training/metabolic training and very faced paced/no breaks.

If you haven't tried the Burn Fat one, you should.
Woo boy! TONS of jump training plus a whole circuit of planks.
It's like a 45 minute long Level 3. Fun, though!

Try running, it'll keep you warm.

Was totally going to say this! If you're walking for 6 miles and you haven't built up the fitness for running yet, may I recommend the Couch to 5k program? It incorporates running/walking intervals in a structured program and many recommend it highly.

I get looks of terror from my roommates when it's 30 degrees and I'm headed out for my run, but I warm up so fast it's easy to forget it's winter!

As for strength training, are you able to join another gym like YMCA? You could do crosstraining there on days you don't run like the elliptical as well as some weight circuits.

I always got funny looks shoveling snow in the New England winters in shorts and a t-shirt, but you just get so hot so quickly with that much exercise. I'd have to come inside to cool off if I went out all bundled up.

Personally I do circuit training because my joints don't allow me to run. Perfect combination of the two things you're looking for and I can only do it about 3 times a week because I'm usually too sore the rest of the week!

Oh, and not Curves like circuit training. I take a class at my local gym (it's only $35/month in Chicago for the gym, hopefully you can find something similar close to you!). It's free weights and high intensity cardio, no machines.

I run and lift weights 4 times a week. Nothing fancy, and you don't need any expensive equipment.

the only thing that's ever kept me fit is an hour of cardio daily. i love going on my lunch hour - my job is mainly preventing stupid people from setting their desks on fire, and taking time off midday to work out lets me release my anger and come back to work feeling all conquering and hot. i use the arc trainer and stairmaster because my joints are all floppy and crappy, and those two are (oddly enough) the only things that don't hurt. i also do some limited arm and leg weights, but they probably wouldn't work for someone with normal joints.

haha you're kinda right. i'm kind of a jill of all trades. i do IT work, but i also do things like making sure the person who runs the gift shop doesn't hand out $50 items for $5, and putting things together that the building staff, for all their muscles and tool belts, can't figure out. i also pretend to be a secretary sometimes.
