Handout for Omnivores

Hi!!
I am trying to make a fairly concise list of the arguments against veganism, with responses that disprove them. Here is what I have so far. Please feel free to suggest more, or challenge my logic so I can form better arguments. Also, feel free to share this with anybody.

You could maybe point out the health risks associated with eating meat, etc., too. And with argument 5 I always use an example that babies don't understand things, or people who have learning disabilities might not understand things, but that doesn't mean they don't feel pain or fear or shouldn't be treated with kindness and love. In a couple of these arguments you could also point out that there is NO biological need for humans to eat meat, and actually we can't digest it. For red meat to pass through our system it has to basically rot, it doesn't digest the way vegetables and fruits and grains do. It's early and I might come back to this when I'm more awake.

i started with the babies/learning disabilities thing, but i couldn't word it properly. I'll try again tho.

I'll add more about the unhealthiness of meat, too! thanks!

Here's one someone prepared earlier. I'm sure they wouldn't mind you using some of their work or improving on it.

Can you edit your post with any additional info when you're done? It'd be nice to have it searchable here =)

You might like to check out the Vegan Outreach version:
http://www.veganoutreach.org/guide/qa.html

Or the ALF version:

There's also the short book "But You Kill Ants" by John Waddell which is a similar sort of thing. 100 questions (and answers) to many questions/challenges vegans and animal advocates get asked. He's an Aussie author too:

I might couch the answer to number 1 a little bit more... otherwise someone will bring up B-12 and feel all high and mighty. You might add "except for vitamin B-12, which is easily available in supplement form." You could even find evidence (there is some out there) that omnis frequently need to supplement B-12 anyway, because it suffers from absorption problems.

I'd also add something about the unhealthiness of meat to the answer some where.

I agree with this, and I also think that if you're going to say that there's "significant evidence" that veg*ns live longer than meat eaters, you need to be able to back that up - there's no such evidence of that that I'm aware of. However, you could talk about the links between meat consumption and colorectal/digestive cancers.

Those risks of colorectal cancer have been qualified with more recent research. If the meat is consumed with fibre the risks go away, without fibre, the risk of cancer is there.
