So, this is a bit of a bummer and a call to the awesome vegans in DC. Apparently, some beaurocratic bullshit (ahem, UMass Amherst, coughcough), says they don't want us using cars for the trip. That, and, the ones who are ALLOWED to use the cars, aren't willing "the shlep someone to a vegan resteraunt", and the only willing organizer who has a car ( Read more... )

Jaysus, I can't believe they wouldn't look out for you and find a vegan friendly place! That's entirely inconsiderate & rude. Would they discard a diabetic and let them starve if it meant going an extra mile or so? Geez. I hope someone steps forward...I would, but I live in Texas. ;p

Well, even though it's not hierarchal, they are the "enviromentalists that still eat meat and don't want to hear about methane from cow production let's get some energy efficient lightbulbs lalalalalaaaa"

I think the metro goes there and it's 10 minutes from the stop from the convention center.

You can take the S bus from silver spring down 16th street and then walk over on Columbia Road to Adams Morgan or walk over on Irving to Columbia Heights (to CH you can also take the red to the green line). Or (coming from the convention center) you can metro up either way (I'd walk to Gallery place if you're going to Adams Morgan).

In Columbia Heights go to Sticky Fingers, Pete's, and Julia's Empanadas (right by Sticky Fingers... the vegetarian is always vegan. the dessert ones aren't vegan).

If you were going to Adams Morgan, I'd actually choose Amsterdam Falafel over Asylum any day of the week, but that's me! Asylum is pretty cheap however, but is standard vegan diner type food.

Agreed, on the Amsterdam Falafel front!

Is the Travel Lodge in Silver Spring near the metro station? (I don't pay much attention to hotels around here!) If so, you can just take the metro to the convention center and to Adams Morgen. Asylum is walkable from either the Adams Morgen metro station or Columbia Heights (I've walked there from the mall before, but I'll a little walk-crazy!) I try to avoid driving in the district, it's usually more hassle than it's worth.

GO TO THE VEGETABLE GARDEN, it's across the street from the White Flint metro station, on the red line. It's all-vegan chinese food and will deep-fry your pants off.
