Rude email from "vegan" company re: beeswax

Jan 25, 2009 12:30

I can't hold this in any longer. I have no one to rant about this to and i kinda wanna get the word out there on this company also. I used to want to get the word out on this company in a GOOD WAY, but they single handedly changed that.

And of course, it steams from the Vegans use bee products "argument"

Who is this?? What line? So I know not to purchase from them. It's totally fine to act all "natural" and "organic" but don't try to make it seem like you're vegan if you're not. LAME.

That is my feeling. I give her mad props for being a small eco-friendly all natural line....but you can't say beeswax is vegan just cause *YOU* make that choice that it is. It's really sad...

Apologies for any confusion:

My Lip Stuff does not promote it's products as being vegan. We never have in any advertisements, on any of our labels, or anywhere on our site claimed this. We try to make a clear division between the 100% vegan/natural line (no beeswax) and the regular line (which does contain beeswax) to make it easier for those looking for the beeswax free options.

that's kind of sad, but i guess small independent businesses are allowed to do crap like that. they can say they're vegan (or fair trade, or whatever) and never have to actually BE those things.

for the record, the idea of orange rosemary lip balm turns my stomach a little bit.

It really is sad. She was nice when she offered to cover me this one time but i just had to pick the available vegan flavors, but once i said that i would pass until her line expands cause i wasn't into the available flavors and the beeswax confusion....WHOA!

I really figure she is defensive cause she proly gets this a lot, being the she "feels" beeswax is a vegan ingredient.

agreed. quality control is MUCH stronger in a small business. you don't have the money to buy yourself out of trouble when you're a small business.

Their website is very misleading (especially the use of the words "animal friendly")! I couldn't find anything listing ingredients....

It is! That was why i got so confused. It's great she offers SO MUCH stuff but it is really not properly organized. And as far as she is concerned, her products ARE vegan...even with the beeswax....which is complete shite.

The ingredent list in hidden in the FAQ

What are the ingredients of your lip balms?
Our regular My Lip Stuff formula ingredients are: Beeswax, cocoa butter, castor oil, sunflower oil, sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, avocado oil, aloe vera, essential and/or flavor oil. Some of our "variations" like the lip tint, lickity lips, for men, etc.. are a slightly different recipe and the changes are usually stated in the product description

and this gem

Does My Lip Stuff offer Vegan friendly- beeswax free products?
Yes. Although we are vegan and still use all our products, some vegans do not use beeswax.

I used to buy from My Lip Stuff before I was vegan, and the lady running it is extremely nice, usually. And I have asked her about the beeswax thing too, and she was always really nice, and I just don't order form her anymore. It sucks because the balms are AMAZING. They smell so awesome and there are so many scents to choose from. I used to buy 10 at a time. But, I really don't get why she doesn't just switch over to just using all vegan ingredients. She is vegan herself, but she uses bee products, why not give it all up?

Are these the ones made by her? I didn't know they were, but I was going to get them with my Peta2 street team points.

She was nice until i mentioned that i was confused about the beeswax and that i would wait till more palatable flavors were "stocked" in the vegan formula.

Those are the very ones i got. They are great. It's really a shame she let her defensive nature get in the way of her professionalism.

And PS...she SAID in her email why she chooses to use beeswax...

"We do use precautions and purchase only beeswax that is harvested naturally without harming the bees. The reason we use beeswax in our products is because it creates a smoother superior lip balm, with the added benefit of natural sun protection (around SPF 15). We do not use chemicals, and therefore there is no possible way to have a true SPF balm, without the use of beeswax (candelilla wax offers no sun protection). It's nearly impossible to have a balm that is everything everyone wants it to be without bending in some direction. Since we use cruelty free beeswax, we chose beeswax over chemicals."

Also, through out the email she kept pointing out that she sells WAY more "regular" formula then vegan so there is no REASON for her to change things.

Which i feel is in DIRECT opposition to her closing argument that "doing the right thing" is more important then sales. If that were the case, she would just make 100% vegan balms. Instead of her "vegan acceptable" bull.

I wonder if she had a blind test of her vegan and non-vegan balms if "WAY more" people would want the non-vegan kind.
