Words for thought. Christianity and Veganism.

I'm Christian, well - more so agnostic, and I became curious to see how many christian vegans there were out there, as I raaarely find any. Anyways, for those of you who are Christian / Theistic who are looking for a fellow theist's experience being vegan or going through the changes,  I thought this would be an interesting article to link here ( Read more... )

Cool! I've never known any theistic vegans in TN or any where else, although I have many atheist vegans as friends.

I am a Christian vegan. My respect for life goes through all choices in my life. That looks like an awesome site! Thanks for posting.

Welcome! I'm glad I found it because whenever I talk to my rents about choosing more ethical options for consumption, they always bring up the bible to prove their "god given" right to eat animals.

Much like every other moral choice we make, why should compassion to animals be any different? Especially when cruel products or dishes can be avoided? Imo I prefer boca burgers over ones made from meat. :D

i agree. that was why i started this. i believe that God gave us meat to eat after the flood because of the lack of vegetation, and if the choice is between starvation and meat, we can eat meat, but in developed countries, there's really no need for it.

Oh you started the blogsite?

When I was a kid I always thought it weird that god would "purposefully" allow humans to consume animals. But when you're a kid and you're told, "that's the way things are" or "well - god said it's 'ok' so that means it's ok." You just kind of go along with it with out researching the bible for yourself.

However, I'm glad that I came across this entry because it's really given me a whole new perspective of vegetarianism and veganism, even better is the fact that I can now defend myself against people who use certain sections of the bible as a scapegoat for their actions.

God made us in his image, shouldn't we try to maintain that image? I love the book Dominion too!

" - what we are to God is almost like what animals are to us. We are lesser than Him but yet He loved us anyways."

Amazing quote and very precise. :)

I think the reason Christians are some of the first to oppose to it is because "the bible tells them so." Well the bible also tells you to stay away from a woman on her period, but most people don't do that, haha. Besides, man has changed god's word so many times that it's gotten muddled. Either way, when you read Genesis and so forth it does make sense that Eden was a place of complete peace and respect for all living beings. If Christians and other theists wish to reach that place again, we have to be compassionate and understanding to all living beings.

Coming to this community was one of the best things I could have done, it's really opened my eyes to truth that all living beings that are sentient or capable of pain should be treated with respect and kindness.

Although I'm theistic, my opinion on it overall is rather loose. I believe there is some kind of higher being, but I don't think that the way most people envision it to be is 100% accurate. It's for this reason that I believe any religion that supports good will and ethics for any being has some sort of validity to it.

Back on track... that's cool! I'm glad I'm finding so many theistic vegetarian/vegans on here. Seriously all but one of my friends are all, "f*ck mindless religious sheep! Rant rant, ect."

That's cool! I read the bible, but haven't been to church in a while. The one we normally go to is amazing though, our pastor is very compassionate and isn't very judgmental like most I've seen. He also promotes that we seek out own truth by reading the bible instead of relying on his opinion or word only.

I'm not vegan :( but I've been working on it, been lacto-vegetarian for almost 3-5 months... lost count. But I'm really developing a taste for soy milk and purchasing more of it so hopefully I can make the full transition by the end of this month. Well, actually I have to double check what's in my drinks and cereals to be officially vegan, but I'm working on it!
