Vegan Repercussions?

Aug 21, 2008 16:31

I read this article just a few minutes ago, and gave it a little time to roll over in my mind awhile, and I've yet to come to a very practical solution to the problem. I have to admit that when I first read the title and ever part of the article itself which quotes a man whom I, at first would have hated due to his pure ignorance and mockery of the ( Read more... )

Farm animals get feed from somewhere, too, so not only are THEY dying, the smaller animals are dying to harvest their soy, corn, etc...

Not to mention, meat eaters eat crops too.

Also, I don't get the point of the article... to point out something that most people already know? Or to try to make vegetarians look stupid or something?

It appears as though it's looking to point out that the situation is less black-and-white as originally perceived to be. It seems like a pretty balanced article, I don't think they're out to overtly promote an omni agenda.

Um, except omnivores eat food that is grown under cultivation, too, and unless we're talking grass pastured livestock killed for meat, which is the exception not the rule, and has it's own environmental problems, then we are killing a lot more little animals growing all the animal feed in order to eat that meat.

Yes, grass pasture lands are safer for small wildlife than monocrop conventional farming. But we can't feed everyone in the human population on grass pastured meat. Humans need a variety of foods. The only real solution is the wide practice of veganism.

this has been discussed before, and i was pretty much gonna say what pqowlaks said.
basically i just feel that veganism is the path of least harm. no system is perfect, but i'm pretty sure i'm causing less deaths than someone who eats a more meat and dairy based diet.

exactly. it's a ridiculous argument: "but you're killing animals too!"..... "hey asshole, at least i'm not doing it ON PURPOSE"

ya know?

i was having this argument with someone else before, and basically you will kill animals no matter what you do. even if you build a cabin in the woods and raise all your own food, you'll end up stepping on a few bugs. the difference to me is the fact that the animals inadvertently killed in food production have a chance to live free and also a chance to run when their home is invaded by our combines and things. i take part in their death, sadly, but i do not take part in enslaving them, and that to me is the bigger issue. and anyway, the omnis who like to pull out this issue always say it's better to eat freely grazed animals, but a) almost none of them actually do it and b) if everyone did do it, everyone would be almost vegan anyway, because it would drive up the price of animal products astronomically. it would make meat what it was for most of human existence, an indulgence, a treat for special occasions ( ... )

Not this again.

Most of those crops go to feed animals that we eat. I don't have the energy to go any further than that.
