I'm a fortnight late with this one, but the consulation exercise is still very much ongoing.  The British government is soliciting healthy recipes for school meal plans.  The Vegan Society is encouraging vegans to email the government with their recommendations:

Christ, I've just remembered my unhappy days as an eight-year-old vegetarian. The vegetarian option at primary school was either fish fingers (!!!) or this strange thing called a 'cheese swirl'. A sort of deep-fried bun thing with an odd cheese taste and chewy texture. I can still see it to this day :( I also remember being told off by the one token mean dinner lady for saying 'pease please, Louise'. She said 'my name's not Louise. And even if it was, you'd still have to call me Mrs Mobberly'. Ouch!

I'll see if I can come up with anything to send in. Most of my cooking is very spicy, which doesn't always go down well with adults, let alone kids ;)

Hurray!!

If nothing else, there is a tremendous array of cooking sites out there, and perhaps sending them loads of links might give them the idea that it's not as "niche" and scary as they think.
