Thanks to all the recommendations yesterday about places to eat in Chicago. We will definitely be going to Soul Veg and Chicago Diner. We will also be trying Karyn's-for deserts only! If we end up being out late i'm going to try out the suggestion for Pick Me Up. Does anyone have any killer breakfast recommendations, or should we go to Pick Me Up ( Read more... )

Pick Me Up or the Diner are the best for breakfast, but the Diner doesn't open until 11, so it's more brunch.

just remember pick me up is sorta small and can be sorta crowded and busy in the am/noonish time, thats the only place i've been to downtown so far that has vegan foods

The vegan macaroni and cheese at Soul Veg is to die for.

Do not miss out on Earwax Cafe. Sounds gross but the last time I went to Chicago i ate their three times. They have great vegan desserts (including peanut butter chocolate cake) and a great menu that includes things like veggie sloppy joes.

DUDE DO NOT GO TO THE CHICAGO DINER.

i lived in chicago for 5 years, it IS ALL HYPE.
personally i would go to pick me up at 2am on a friday, because its open that late. til 4 i think. pick me up is not a veg restaurant, but has many vegan options. i'd say the brunch at the chiacago diner is better than pick me up, but it is mostly hype.

oh yeah, if you're in wicker park/boys town make sure to check out HANDLEBAR, pedal bicycle bar with amazing vegan food, go there for breakfast and see if they still have biscuits and gravy.

go to pick me up instead. if you have a car drive 30 minutes north to BLIND FAITH CAFE in evanston, or take the train. blind faith is one of the bests veg restaurants in chicago. get seitan fajitas, mongolian seitan, or seitan marsala.

soul veg you MUST go to, or i won't speak to you again.

i almost forgot about handlebar! oh god their chocolate raspberry torte is sooo good.

i always slam the diner, and then recommend it based on the 5 things on the entire menu that are good, and then follow that with a disclaimer that all of the food is overrated. its a restaurant i hate but i always find myself there for one reason or another a few times a year. when i moved from omaha, i thought it was the bee's knees, but after learning too cook and eating in NYC its just not that great.

omg i've been to the diner close to 100 times, if not more, and i've only had one dish i absolutely hated and they only had it on the menu for like a week. i couldn't count how many veg restaurants i've been to but it's easily the best overall. 100% vegan bakery, 10$ entrees that are HUGE, friendly staff. i get the backlash, i mean there are so many other places in the city to check out but it really is just the safest bet for tourists to go and have a nice vegan meal if you don't have time to run around the entire metropolitan area.

but to the person who recommended blind faith over the diner?!? i've been to blind faith 3 times because i wanted so badly to like it but it had to be the most boring overpriced food i've ever had. not to mention the fact that they use honey but did not state it on the menu.

i haven't been to handlebar, i didn't know they were veg. i'll definitely be going soon.

the bakery is nasty, though. i can name 3 friends off of the top of my head that spank diner's cakes into oblivion without even trying. i can't even bake and i make better chocolate cake. i get disappointed when vegans i know who are used to good food go there and are like "oh shit, that shit was not good".

buuuuuuuuut, again, i will say that it is best for tourists just because the menu is so huge compared to other places in town, its pretty central to cool shit and transport, and they might be able to get things they can't get at home. i lived about 30 seconds away from that place for about a year and even after i moved was there almost once a week, so i've eaten a lot of diner in my life, too. one thing that i will say is that their food was MARKEDLY different and more holy cow delicious when they had a different baker and a different cook. however, the owners being batshit insane caused those people to leave, and to take their yummy recipe modifications with them. :(
