Update on vegan film and ILFORD

Many of you may remember a post of mine from just over a week ago regarding the availability of vegan film for photography ( The original post can be seen here). I wrote to ILFORD, a company I have heard makes film using vegetable rather than animal derived gelatine, to see what the official word was on their products currently. I'm not sure that there would be a big incentive for companies to do so, since actual film is a dying medium. When I was in grad school I saw many of my favorite photographic papers and films phased out.

I agree! I hold a MFA in Photography and film (esp. larger formats) are my favorite to shoot and develop in. It does make me feel guilty for using film, but in terms of image quality and affordability, there is def. NO comparison to digital yet.

maybe i'm just dumb, but for the life of me i can't understand why no companies or labs have come up with a way to generate test-tube gelatin. is anyone even trying?

I took a class on the science of photography once and asked the professor about this issue. He warned me that some papers for digital printing also contain gelatin. :-(
