question on hair dye.

Apr 22, 2007 00:26

sup, guys. I have medium-brown hair, but would like to dye it black for at least three days for an anime convention and was wondering what options I have. I assume henna is one. the other factor besides vegan is that I don't want anything that will mess up my hair or scalp. anyone tried anything or have an idea?

If it's real henna with nothing mixed in, it won't dye anything but red/orange/coppery. It's also permanent, so beware.

if you get a demi-permanent black(probably at whole foods, or loreal doesn't test on animals i think--that's walgreens) it's going to be a month to wash out (or if you want to get it out real fast and have some nasty feeling hair for a couple days just wash it out with some super lathery dish soap)
henna is not going to work.
you've got the spray in option (doubt that comes in vegan)
or some manic panic/punky color which, again, 28 washes. (sally beauty supply---or online)

have you ever dyed your hair?
black is pretty hard to get out because it is SO drastic.
but the dish soap thing works fairly well, you have to put it in your hands and lather it up real nice first.
it works, i promise haha.(just don't do it more often than you have to!)

Look at Henna For Hair - they have a huge amount of information, including using indigo to dye your hair black.

Revlon doesn't test on animals. I'm not sure if they make a semiperminent hair dye. Also, many salons use hair dyes that are not tested on animals like Paul Mitchell, Wella (which Aveda salons use--though I'd ask to be sure since it may not be the same everywhere), and Sexy Hair. I'd suggest going to a salon for the sake of your hair (it will turn out much better, last longer, and keep your hair MUCH healthier).

as much as I'd like to stay out of a salon, I would definitely take your advice for the sake of my hair!

I've definitely learned the hard way with that one. Ultimately you'll save more money because you won't have to spend money on treatments to restore it. I'm sure it will look wonderful!

I worked for Aveda and we used Aveda colour which is all natural and organic. i HIGHLY suggest going to an Aveda Concept salon. We definately did not use wella. Paul Mitchell himself is huge on animal rights and non of their products are tested on animals. He has a lot of campeigns right now about cruelty free products. So id go to an Aveda salon (avedas organic and all of their products are biodegradeable which is a huge thing b/c most hair company's products just sit in the earths soil). Goodluck!

cool cool, but I have some questions. is aveda harmful to your hair and what is the time frame it stays in?

heres the thing, there are 2 types, permanent and semi permanent.
for a colour to become permanent it has to go inside the hair shaft. this is done usually by ammonia or something of the sorts that opens up the hair shaft and makes it swell, allowing the colour to deposite. the semi permanent (which iis known as demi) sits on the hair shaft and fades with each rinse. Thers no way youll be able to have black hair for only 3 days with any type of dye. unless you use some sort of spray on that lasts for a couple hours im guessing? which if your hairs real light itll probably stain your hair a little anyways. but with aveda everything is plant based. if your colouring on virgin hair (which means never been colored) than your hair wont get much damage if any. damage is formed over time, with the build up of colour. id suggest asking for them to use the demi colour, it wont be invasive and itll be the most gentle.

hope that helps.
xoxo
