hey guys! i've been reading the No Impact Man blog and compiling a short list of tips for myself to reduce my environmental impact even more than i am now. i disagree with some of the stuff he's doing (like eating dairy) yet he's got so many great ideas that absolutely need to be taken into account. so prepare yourselves-- i may be asking a lot ( Read more... )

i live in an apartment and i've been composting all my organic waste (vegetable matter, human and pet hair, dryer lint, newspapers, dead plants, coffee and tea, etc.) in an old 14 lb cat little container that i drilled a bunch of holes in.
This is my first time composting so i don't know how well i'm doing, but i guess the trick is to have the right ratio of greens to browns in layers, and to turn it often to aerate it.

if you don't know what to do with the compost once it has turned to compost, you can try growing your own food with it (i'm going to attempt a fire-escape herb garden just as soon as i have the time), or you can always freecycle it or donate it to a local farm or co-op.

oh yeah i keep the container on the fire escape because of the smell. it doesnt really smell that bad though, especially with the lid on. i'm sure i could keep it under the sink or something with the lid on and wouldn't even notice a smell.

I contemplated using a straight razor for my face for the same reason. However, in the end I found the prospect to be too frightening. I opted for a safety razor, instead. Every drug store I've been to sells blades for them. Once the blades are too dull to shave, they are still plenty sharp for other uses. I also feel they create less waste than modern shaver cartridges once I do have to dispose of them. Best of all, I still have a nose!

1. You might want to look into either using an epilator or body sugar (which can be made at home); both are good methods of hair removal, and mean you only have to do it once in a while, depending on the coarseness of your body hair, which reduces over time.

2. Pass.

3. As mentioned above, worm composting is apparently marvellous for apartment dwellers. If you know anyone in your area with a garden or who has houseplants, I'm sure they'd love to share.
