Definitions of veganism.

I'm writing a definition paper on veganism for my English class. They assignment was, basically, to define something in an interesting way. I'm having a hard time getting away from, "A vegan doesn't use or consume animal products. Veganism is healthy and easy. Etc ( Read more... )

i'd include some of the environmental reasons for becoming vegan... for instance, the comparison of SUVs and hybrids (meat eaters/vegans).... that might give it another dimmension...

How has veganism changed the way you understand life? I think that's the way you should look at it. For me, veganism is only partially something that concerns diet. I see veganism as doing everything in my power to oppose the systems which sufficate life and our ability to live.

I'd include something like how your body is built for the consumption of grains and veggies, and less for meat than people normally think. The "natural" information section of this website helped make a good argument:

You could include something about the environmental benefits to being vegan. I read today that 80% of all the grains grown in the US are made into cattle feed. The beef industry is nuts! It's so wasteful.

I think of veganism as the ultimate expression of compassion - the full extension of rights to all, not just to one's own race, gender, or species. It is the absence of bigotry.

Animal industries create more pollution than all other industries combined. If you could find a source for that statement, that'd be another interesting/different statement to make.
