i thought that the ALF never was able to be claimed by things that were human-hurting. You know? Like, it was that other more militant group that one was supposed to claim when one did AR stuff that would hurt people.

I don't know the situation in America, but in the UK the ALF press office acts as a general repository for publicising actions. So it could easily be another group, not that 'group' is the best word as none of these have official membership lists and so on. My guess would be that the ALF wouldn't attach that name to something like this, but the press office would publicise it and pass the press release on without comment.
