Are there organizations out there that not only promote the vegan lifestyle, but also try and promote a better existance for humanity in general as well? I keep coming across vegans who have for all intents and purposes given up on their fellow man, and that makes me sad. I want to devote more of my time and energy into not only helping the vegan ( Read more... )

I'll be honest - I haven't looked for organisations that do both, I've just looked at organisations that cover specific areas I'm interested in. So, for example, checking out helplines for the emotionally distressed/suicidal, organisations that work to protect the homeless or the mentally fragile, etc. I'll be interested to see groups that have "crossover appeal".

Earthsave, run by famous vegan John Robbins, is mostly a human health based organization, operating on a vegetarian (strict) platform. So they aren't about (all species) animal rights as far as the law goes, but their work certainly benefits all animal species.

Similarly, Frances Moore Lappé's Small Planet Institute promotes sustainable society, health, and what she calls a "living democracy" which bases it's political policies and solutions on community health and grassroots involvement. She's also the author of the groundbreaking book from the 70's Diet for a Small Planet which ushered in a huge level of awareness of how our food industry was not only harming our planet, but human health and society as well. She proved that humans could be a healthy living on a vegetarian diet (while unwittingly starting the myth that you needed to use "protein combination" to do so). She's got the very wholistic attitude of living in the healthiest way possible, which obviously includes not abusing anyone, of any species ( ... )

http://www.childhaven.ca is also a veg childrens home in india.. and they have a soycow project. =0D
