me.. i'm doing the walk! but I feel weird asking meat-eaters for money for it... I am mostly sponsoring myself and trying not to feel bad that I'm not sponsoring the guy at work because of it... sponsoring his walk for cancer-which his wife has. I also didn't sponsor his kids thing either cause those charities do animal testing among other things I don't like, and I'd rather stick to ones I know/understand.
I have a friend who does the 150-mile bike ride for MS every year, and we negotiated a plan where I found a charity that supports people with MS and isn't involved in animal testing, but is involved in the use of brain scans of people with MS instead. But it was very uncomfy bringing it up in the beginning.
This is tricky and I empathize. The granddaughter of a friend of my partner has leukemia. Several months ago they put on a fundraiser to benefit a particular foundation at Sick Kids' Hospital here in Toronto. I made my calls and determined that my money could not be earmarked for non-animal research since it was an external fundraiser. I decided not to go.
It's tough because the assumption is that everyone supports cancer research and how can I deny research for this disease that a little girl is suffering from? I imagine some people think it's mean or unfeeling. I just need to be able to explain each time why I cannot support any kind of research that uses animals.
