I have been a vegan for about a month and a half. I just moved back home from working at a summer camp and the lack of responsibility over the last week has given me the opportunity to do a lot of staying up late and lounging around. I've done the staying up late + lack of activity thing before and besides being a little tired and irratable it ( Read more... )

99.9% of the time what you are experiencing is the result in a drop in blood pressure. Don't stand up so quickly and stay hydrated.

Unless you're failing to eat absolutely any nutritional foods, being vegan for a month and a half should not cause any such problems.

It might help to know what you are eating, before anyone here might be able to comment on what you might be missing.

Also - if you're serious about diet and nutrition, pick up Becoming Vegan by Brenda Davis R.D. and Vesanto Melina, M.S., R.D. It has everything a vegan needs to know to eat right. You might also want to invest in a multi-vitamin, if you're serious about being a healthy vegan, particularly a B12 supplement.

That said - the eye thing - are you able to see a doctor? An eye doctor? How serious is this? I've had this happen in the past (before going vegan), and it usually had to do with lying around watching a lot of tv, rather than anything I might or might not have been eating (although crappy food did usually use to go along with lying around and watching tv.)

I am in the same boat as you. I have been vegan for about a month now and sometimes feel the same way. I have found eating something with some protein in it has helped. I know I am not getting enough protein yet, but I am working on finding more protein rich foods. When you start to feel that way have a spoon of nut butter (I like fresh peanut butter)

Sounds like a drop in blood pressure. Make sure to eat and keep your blood pressure up. then get more active!

Yeah, I have low blood pressure as well, and sometimes I get the same light-headedness w/ fuzzy vision that quickly gets worse and worse until I can't see, but passes in a couple seconds. It's happened now and again all my life and has never been a source of concern.

Does your family have a history of high/low blood-pressure?

Are you eating enough?
Are you eating enough complex carbs?
Are you eating too much sugar/not enough fruit or juice, and so getting sugar-crashes?

Are you properly hydrated?

Are you getting 7-8 hours of good quality sleep per night? (see the National Sleep Foundation for information on this - more people sleep poorly than realise it).

To be sure you're eating correctly, check the Vegan Society's superb nutrition pages.
