"would having an abortion go against vegan principles?"

I can't see why it would.

Um. That reads more snippy than I meant it. Please don't take that as a hostile statement; I meant it at face value only.

This is one of the questions that gets asked often and debated endlessly. You should just read up on comments that were talked about in previous discussions. We have a good memories system here at vegan people.

For the abortion debate look here

biiiiig blowups over this issue.

anyway, check out fam for the fertility awareness method. you can use it as a backup method to your condoms. it's the most vegan method i've found.

also, if the man would like to reduce his sperm count, try this out. it sounds fascinating. http://www.malecontraceptives.org/methods/simple_heat.php

i love science.

It pretty much depends on the vegan. Seems like everyone has their own idea of when life begins. If you get an abortion after that, I'd say it's not really vegan. There isn't really an exact definition for that.

I'm not sure of any "accidentally vegan" contraceptives, but https://vegsexshop.com/home.html has condoms and other things in it.

(I'm not some sort of perv. I googled it, I swear. haha)

There's nothing wrong with a familiarity with feminist, queer-friendly, sex-positive sex shops :)

The FDA informed me that both the Nuva-Ring and the Ortho-Evra patch are animal-free, though there appear to have been some problems with the patch; I had no problems with it during the 3 years I was using it, but I ditched it last year, and then articles started appearing about it.

Oh, and IUDs would be vegan, no?

also does any one know any great vegan contraceptive devices whether they are accidentally vegan or designed specifically with vegans in mind?

The Fertility Awareness Method is a vegan method of birth control that women can use (I wasn't sure from your userinfo if you are female). Basically the woman takes her temperature every morning, and notes different fertility signs (cervical fluid and position) on a chart. From this information it's possible to determine when ovulation occurs, and when the woman's fertile days are (so that she can abstain from sex on those days to avoid pregnancy). The devices used are a thermometer, a book or class that explains the method in detail, and, optionally, software to keep track of her cycles. There are no side effects and it is 98% effective with perfect use. It can be combined with using condoms, but on its own it doesn't provide any protection against sexually transmitted infections.

The book Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a fantastic resource on FAM, as is the fam community here on LJ.

I second the book recommendation. I just finished reading, it was very comprehensive and easy to understand.
