There's no risk to humans from soya
The hormones in cow's milk are potentially far more harmful than those in plants, says Justine Butler

Thanks for that! Currently trying to collate information about dairy, and about deforestation caused by farming, so this is useful. Expect more requests on these topics soon...

sad... but isn't it due to the fact that soya is heavily modified to gain in weight or something else??

I reckon tt hormones in milk are more dangerous because animal body adds some ferments and stuff, you know what I mean...
well, GM soya ain't good either! here the branding is compulsory whether soya was genetically modified. is there such thing in EU, UK and US?

this is really very interesting. i'm always looking for news on the estrogen in soy for my mom. she had breast cancer 5 years ago, probably due to hormone levels (says her doctor), so she avoids my food a lot because of the soy. she tells me she'd eat less meat and milk if she could have the soy, which i really think would be excellent for her health. alas, i don't think she'd believe an article from a vegetarian organization, but it's still a great article nonetheless. she's drinking organic-not-horizon milk now. thanks for posting. :)

Maybe you could introduce your mom to other vegan/vegetarian options like rice milk/almond milk, sietan, and etc. Even though soy is a big staple for most vegans and vegetarians, it's not quite everything we eat. There are some vegans that don't even consume soy due to allergies (which I think would be pretty difficult), but it isn't impossible. So maybe you could ween her onto things like that? It's worth a shot?

i do make muffins and cookies with rice milk and she loves them, and she loves all my recipes for vegetable soups and stews, but she's sort of a foodie and doesn't really like the taste of rice milk and almond milk alone. i've slowly gotten her to eat more things like brown rice, couscous, whole grain bread and organic foods. i think if i can introduce her to a good milk substitute that's not soy and is drinkable alone she'd go for it, but so far i've had no luck. if you can recommend something that tastes better than rice dream, you'd be my hero. thanks for the advice.

I actually rather like the other grain milks, and there are some mixed grain milks around. It's a very, very personal thing, though - I love oatmilk, but my husband turns his nose up at it; we both love almond milk, though.
