coworker advice

Jul 31, 2006 14:14

Started a new job this week. I have one coworker who keeps remarking "eat a hamburger" or "eat meat"...I find it rather rude and want to shut her up but do not need to get fired on my second week. How would you deal with it?

It is not a girl but a woman in her 40s...

Which makes her look even worse.

If you can, remember that you are the grown-up in this situation. This woman is so mired in her own stuff she can't behave like a reasonable adult. It's sad. It's pathetic. It's out of control. And that means you're the one with power, because you're conscious of your behaviour and how it affects others; you're adult enough to be able to interact with others without the need to put them down. If you can point out to yourself that every time she acts out she's handing over her power, and every time you smile and make clear that she's not getting to you (even if she is) you're exercising your power over her like an adult with a fractious child, it can help. I know it helps me when I'm in difficult situations.

Now I just have to apply it when I'm with family; love them to death, but they can hit your hot-buttons like no-one else.

if she continues, I think you have the right to say politely that you don't tell her to "stop eating meat" every chance you get, so you would appreciate it if she didn't make those remarks. if she doesn't get it, take it up with HR.

I find that, "I don't mean to be rude, but I would appreciate if you would respect my moral convictions enough to stop saying things like that" works pretty well.
