SUPER EXCITED:  I am going camping!

Anyone have good camping food recommendations for the weekend?

This is real camping, as in, fire and cooler and that is it.

Thanks in advance!

What kind of camping, car camping or backpack camping?

I only have experience with car camping, so my suggestions are based on that:

- canned and dried fruit (whatever you like -- juice-pack peaches and pineapple, and dried appricots and cranberries are my favourite)
- soy nuts
- quick oatmeal
- bagels and peanut butter
- pliable sundried tomatoes (I like them on sandwiches)
- rice and beans (packaged if you have a brand you like)

You probably really need to know what kind of camping, so you know what to take and what to prepare for! If you are going to seriously camp in the middle of nowhere, you'll need to know exactly how much water to take, so you don't, well, die. And you might need bear-proof food conatiners, and how to use them properly, so you don't, well, die. And you won't want to take anything heavy or unnecessary if you will be hiking there.

On the other hand, if you have a motor vehicle dragging you and your stuff there, then you pretty much don't have to do any serious camping preperation.

Well, I thought the "fire and cooler" would have been a clear indication of car camping.

In ether case, I always like to bring pancake mix camping. They make some mixes that do not require eggs. It makes a good breakfast.

For other meals, chillies and stews are good options. Freeze them, and they will help keep the other food cold. You can eat them as they though.

Sandwhich makings are also a plus, as they are easy to carry if you do day trips away from your camp site.

Have fun!

Granola and soymilk (the kind like west soy in the boxes, so they don't have to take up room in the cooler), canned beans, (I love easting garbanzos straight from the can), and if you can, bring a small cast iron pan to put in the fire and make cornbread/fritters/pancakes. It would be best to mix the dry ingredients before hand, then just add water or something. TVP cooked in water with a little bit of taco seasoning makes a mean taco filler, the other taco supplies are pretty easy to carry and make if you just use salsa, TVP, tortillas, and maybe some greens. Pretty much any food that is easy to carry I guess. Be creative, and have fun! You should post pictures of your vegan camping experience!

I love camping! You are so lucky!

Things that I brought with me when I went:

- Smilk in aseptic containers
- Cereal/Granola
- Earth balance(on ice)
- Aseptic pack mori-nu tofu. Firm.
- Packaged tofu scramble spices
- Tofurkey Jurkey
- Bread
- Vegan sammich fixings, mostly lightlife sammich slices, some greens for the first day and an onion.
- Mustard and ketchup
- Soy hot dogs and buns (on ice)
- Vegan Marshmallows (You can get them at Pangea)
- Vegan Graham crackers (check your local natural foods place, I forget which brand I liked. ><)
- A block or three good vegan chocolate
- Vegan burgers (on ice), and buns
- Lara bars or non perishable food bar of choice
- Popocorn kernals to try popping over the fire
- Veggie oil and salt
- Spices
- Instant coffee and tea
- Canned stuffed grape leaves (num)
- Canned beans (I'm weird, I eat them straight out of the can)
- Chips, salsa, tings, munchy things
- Apples and some fresh fruit

That'll keep you fed. *grins*

Welcome! Oh! If you try the popcorn thing make sure the pot you use has a long handle or you have a pair of those long oven mits. Lest you get a tan.

I was pleasantly surprised that one of the big prepackaged camping food companies, Mary Jane's Farm/Backcountry Food makes organic vegan stuff. You can probably pick it up at good camping stores, like REI (not just an ordinary corporate store, but a co-op!). (Though I see that they do say that the food is produced on equipment that also produces dairy, just FYI.)

ohhh i miss my REI. I had one in my hometown, but mid-Michigan isn't as friendly. Booo...

However, I will keep that in mind for the next time I go home!

Thanks!
