I love your icon, though it confused me because I use a *very* similar one somewhere else online, and I was like "Did I already say something, and I didn't think I used that on lj" :P
i think guilt figures a lot into a reaction of this sort. because they know deep down that the animal cruelty that happens everyday is wrong and they continue to deny it and support it.
I might get in trouble for making broad generalizations, but I think a lot of vegans relish the fact that they are extremests. It comes with the territory - veganism *is* not the norm, and only a very small percentage of people practice it, egro: exremests. They're just extremests about food/AR.
Secondly, veganism for many vegans is about ethics and morality.
If you combine those two factors, what you have is a group of extremests who are rigidly ethical. That's not a condemnation, it's just descriptive.
Most people are going to bristle at that. Veganism is going to elicit a strong response of backlash.
My advice is just wear your flame retardent suit and return hostility with friendliness.
that's good advice and generally what i try to do. i usually bake something yummy as well. =) it just makes me sad to see ignorance and apathy encouraged.

I'm sure this must be true for some people, but I would *love* to see the day when veganism was the norm. I get excited when I see the word "vegan" in print, because that means its one more step in the right direction. I'm at my happiest when I'm with people who understand veganism, and I go out of my way *not* to bring it up in circumstances when it wouldn't be beneficial. So, I guess what I'm saying is that while surely there are some vegans who get off on the extremism, I'd say that in my experience, vegans are just people who are doing what they think is right, and hoping and working for the day when noone thinks killing/torturing animals is okay.
well said. i've never been an extremist and i don't think of being vegan as being extreme. it's just not the social norm. i would also like to see a time when veganism becomes normal, a time when we treat all living creatures, including other humans, with kindness and respect.
*shrug* I've browsed that comm many times and in general, I don't mind it. From their userinfo:
Have you ever been enjoying a nice rosemary and garlic chicken at a cafe, and have a vegan walk by and tell you what a monster you are?
IMO, asshat vegans like that deserve to be mocked, and are giving the rest of us a bad name. It's an embarrassment to the rest of us who are civil towards other people and respect their choices. Protest McD's all you like, but don't give people shit for walking into the damn building. It's none of your damn business.
in general i think vegans get more shit than they give about eating habits. and i think these people are just making fun of something they don't understand. i have omnivores antagonize and harass me all the time. i don't have an aniti_omnivore community and ostricize and poke fun of every omni i come across. i just think the community stems from pettiness and ignorance.
Right, I agree that vegans take a fair amount more crap than most of us give. I know it's happened more than once that a family member hassles me about what I eat, but when I do fling back at them about all that went into the cheeseburger on their plate, suddenly I'm the one pushing my beliefs on others. Anyone who does it to anyone else is asking for getting it right back.

Even before I was vegan, I was never like that.
Being purposefully ignorant... it's the American way.
