Perplexing

I'm currently Googling for vegan, fair trade slippers. Not mules, but full-foot, warm, sitting around in the house in winter slippers. I had no idea it would be so difficult. I've looked in some of the obvious places (Vegan Essentials, Pangea, Alternative Outfitters, Mooshoes, A Different Daisy, Zappos, Earth Shoes), but to no avail. I can have ( Read more... )

er - really out on a limb here (and checking would need to be done as to veganness), but Marks&Sparks had some nice faux-sheep skin suedo-ugg-boots slippers in? Theu had pink and natural....the bottoms might need research though, cos they looked like some kinda plastic??

Experience says that the shipping and custom duty would be expensive. I'm moving back to Britain in March, and am loathe to spend the cash on importing at the moment, but it was a good thought :)

this might be a stupid question, but what's felt made out of that isn't vegan? i don't use it, so i haven't been unintentionally unvegan, i suppose, but i haven't really thought about felt.

It's pressed wool.

Felt's not always pressed wool. I have felted things made out of non-wool yarn.

How about hemp? These might not do because they're not full-foot, but they might be worth a look:

Disclaimer: Not all products at the site are vegan. Some use wool and, I think, silk. But these slippers appear to be vegan.

Well, I see what you mean. I keep coming up with the kind that doesn't cover the full foot (they're called mules? I always wondered what that meant. I never know fashion words!) I just found more of the same at this site: http://www.downbound.com/category_s/5.htm.

I'll keep looking. I hate not being able to find something that should exist!

You could try a locally made product by an artisan. Polar fleece is made of recycled plastic and is easy to sew, and I see a lot of slippers made with it at craft shows and crafty shops.

If I find any local artisans I'll check it out :) Actually, combining this advice with the mention of making my own, I might give it a bash. Who knows - it might not be a complete catastrophe.

You know, there are some patterns out there that even I might be able to follow:

Adult Polar fleece slippers
Polar Slipper
But I think my favourites (probably because of the pretty pictures) are the Homespun and My Favorite Pair patterns, which are both billed as "easy to sew", and appear not to have too many parts.
