How vegan is vegan?

We all know that veganism isn't a diet, it's a lifestyle. So it's not just about not eating animal products, it's about not supporting animal abuse in as many was as possible. So it seems like we ought to be trying to avoid not just products, but businesses and brands and parent corporations that are involved in animal abuse. [Edit: from the ( Read more... )

The way I see it, if I support the vegan products of non-vegan companies, and they realize there is a lot of money to be made with vegan friendly merchandise. Then maybe they will make more of it, and that will open more people up to it and over all just improve p

You said it. If there's a choice of equal products, I'll buy one with the better backing, but I have enough going on in my life, I can't research every company I buy already vegan foods from. Non-vegan companies buy vegan companies because there's money to be made. I don't think it's unethical of the vegan companies to sell out to non-vegan companies because they make products with milk or meat.

I agree that the person you are agreeing with has a point... but I'm not sure what you're saying. Are you saying you don't want to give preference to vegan companies (since it encourages the non-vegan ones to make more vegan products), or you do, though you don't have time to research it yourself?

Another way of putting the question is, if some person/organization/site did the research for you, would you give preference to veg*n companies (and/or companies owned by veg*n companies), or do you think this would be counterproductive?

i agree. you can't, in this world, completely cut off all those companies. i don't have the fucking money to be buying all organic from companies that only make vegan foods.

that's what i was thinking too. buying vegan products from non-vegan companies shows them that there is more of a demand than, say, if everyone boycotted them for the sole fact that all their products aren't vegan.

If I only bought food from companies that only made vegan products, I would die. I mean, how many companies are there like that? And how many are available in Southeastern Idaho?

Well no one is saying "only". I'm taking about something as simple as, given the choice of Silk vs. [Some Vegan Company's Brand], assuming there is one, should we choose the latter? Obviously there's only going to even be a choice with a couple foods.

smart bacon is made by conagra? ewwwwwwa.

ok.. I agree with some of the intent beyond most of these comments... the smaller [or even some of the larger, better run] non-vegan companies ... whatever.

but ConAgra is the epitome of evilness and Id rather starve than support them, honestly. I guess its up to personal preferance... but I dont NEED to eat fake bacon. My life will go on without it ( ... )
