Losing weight as a vegan with hypothyroidism.

Hi there! I was recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism, which unfortunately runs rampantly in my family. I am currently on medication (levothyroxine, generic synthroid), and when I asked my doctor about this she said we'd have to wait and see how the medication goes and hope for the best. Anyway, as anyone familiar with this condition will know, ( Read more... )

I have hypothyroidism too and have managed to find my stabilizing dose of hormone replacement. It took me about six month to get back to my original shape (which was absent for about ten years...). It takes time but it happens. Don't crash diet, don't overexercise, go to a vegan or pro-vegan nutritionist to have a look at your daily feeding habits, don't overexercise and be patient.

i highly recommend reading up on the health at every size philosophy of health and diet management, and second the comment about not crash dieting or overexercising. hypothyroid treatment (thyroid hormone supplement) will help most of all, and trying to force weight loss will backfire. (you'll have a 95% chance of regaining that weight, often plus extra, and it'll damage your metabolism and stress your body.) our bodies have natural setpoints, and caloric restriction messes with them. you're better off eating healthfully, moving enjoyably and realistically, and not stressing over what the scale says ( ... )

I think stabilizing hormone levels is the key, finding the right dosage, one's body recovering (time might vary depending upon different factors). Like others have said don't crash diet or over-exercise, and I would recommend to not severely restrict unrefined carbohydrates (whole grains, starchy vegetables). Carbohydrates are our bodies' only fuel, and whole food carbohydrates work very differently from refined white grains and sugars (because of the nutrient density, the fiber, vitamins, minerals). Having enough fuel (carbohydrates) will help to keep our energy up, will help to keep our metabolism up. I don't mean to consume too much, or too little, just right. One might be able to tell based on body signals, if not consult a vegan/pro-vegan nutritionist (as already recommended). It might help to cut out oils -oils not fat- and with salad if you use a store bought salad dressing consider making your own with nuts, avocado, or even fat-free on occasion. And make sure you're getting enough calories for your height, build, body ( ... )
