Egg replacer BBE dates

I'm making a carrot cake for a girlfriend tomorrow and the recipe calls for commercial egg replacer (I think it's really for the texture as it's quite a heavy cake). I've just noticed that my Allergy Care egg replacer has a BBE date of 31 March - do you reckon it's still ok to use. There's no mold on it and I think it smells alright but I don't ( Read more... )

I'd totally use it. It's only two weeks past and, like you said, it's best before (but I'd even use it if it was two weeks past the "use by" date, too). I've totally used cake mix months after the use-by date, and i survived (didn't get sick, either).

I don't think food poisoning is the issue. Food poisoning is usually caused by contamination or allowing leftovers and such to sit out at room temp too long. Generally, wet stuff. Dry powdered stuff shouldn't have a problem. (I assume it is? ener-g egg replacer is a powder, anyway.)

Those dates are usually just an indication of when something starts to lose quality, ie baking powder past it's use by date might not make your baked goods rise.
