Butter subsitutes without palm oil?

Does anyone have a favorite butter substitute that does not contain palm oil? I'm thinking of asking my local grocery to carry this, but I'd love to hear if anyone else has any ideas.

My GF and I are vegan and I like to give her a hard time because often times I'm not convinced that vegan alternative are entirely healthful. Fake meats fall into this as does the prevalent use of palm derived fats. There is a difference between the lipid profiles of palm fruit as opposed to palm oil. Palm fruit is more similar to coconut oil, which has a better spectrum of fats than palm kernel oil. That said, these are saturated fats, which while they aren't animal derived are STILL saturated (solid) fats. Are you hoping to replace the taste of butter? I really like olive oil and use it most of the time in place of Vegan margarine (like Earth Balance). For baking, you can generally substitut canola oil for butter, though pastries really do require solid fat to give flakiness.

I agree with this. I use very very little solid butter subs. I try to use canola oil and olive oil most of the time. I find that most butter subs are not healthy or environmentally friendly, which conflicts with many peoples reasons for eating vegan.

There are two butter recipes in Ani's Raw Food Kitchen that I can give you:

Olive Butter: 1/4 c extra virgin olive oil + 1/4 t salt= mix and freeze, use as needed.

And

Coconut Butter: 1/4 c coconut oil + 1 T white miso= mix and serve... I would imagine you wouldn't need to freeze this kind since coconut oil is pretty solid at room temp. But I'm sure it couldn't hurt...

I haven't tried them myself cause I never really used butter much anyway, but figured I'd pass them on in case this is the kind of thing you are looking for. Good luck!
