Daiya cheese

Nov 14, 2009 21:42

Ok, I was not really believing the hype about this Daiya cheese stuff, but I recently got my hands on some, and I had a quesadilla today. A real, melty, stretchy, delicious quesadilla. It still has that vaugely processed-chemically flavor, kind of like a Kraft single, but it NAILS the texture and mouthfeel. Daiya's about as nutritious as Vegenaise ( Read more... )

Good: I had some on an Amici pizza today.

Bad: Rainbow Grocery in San Francisco was sold out and they don't know when they're getting another shipment in because Daiya "is being difficult in setting up a regular distribution." *cry*

I had a Daiya quesadilla last week and it ruuuuuuuullllleeeeedddd! It's also good on stir fry, toast, everything in my fridge....

Last time I was at Amici's, they were still using Teese, I think. I was in Southern California this last week, and found it at Whole Foods. They were sold out on Sunday, but had some when I went back looking for road munchies on Thursday.

I'm glad to know Rainbow supposedly has it. That's still a pretty insane drive for me, but it's a lot closer than Los Angeles. I hope that the Sacramento Co-Op starts carrying it, because I'm pretty hooked.

I only eat in the San Rafael and Vacaville Amicis so I can't vouch for them all. These two restaurants definitely have the oh-so delicious Daiya!

Rainbow had a lot in last week but they got wiped out in a mad vegan rush on the store. ;) If you do go, make sure you check out the dessert case. They have a lot of new (I think) items. I had something along the lines of a Ho Hos today. It was pretty darn good (a nagging feeling told me Sticky Fingers in DC would make them better).

The Vacaville Amici's is the only one I've ever been to. It's halfway between my brother's place in Emeryville and Sacramento, where I live, plus it's got that great plaza where my 4 year-old can run off some steam before the drive home, so I occasionally meet my brother for pizza there. The ice cream place in the building over by the Jelly Belly store usually has a couple of vegan sorbets, too.

Take heart! Daiya does not taste like GOOD dairy cheese, but it does taste like REAL cheese, if that makes sense. It does exist, and I'm betting that it is going to be available.

dang. this was going to be my question. i never was a fan of processed cheese/kraft singles/etc. so i am always on the lookout for cheese that tastes like a good, 2-5 year old white cheddar!

This is the closest vegan cheese that I've found to that. And I have tried them ALL.

I bought some and I found a little bit of mold in it, the green kind. But I didn't see any on the pizza so I figured it was okay. I felt reeeeally sick afterwards.

Funny you should mention that. Not funny "haha," but funny I can relate. I bought some and ate it like crazy so it wouldn't go bad, and I've had some terrible stomach problems all weekend. I'm trying to link it back to something that isn't Daiya, but am having a hard time doing so =(
