Baking Recipes without Baking Powder

Jul 21, 2009 00:34

My stepmom and I are trying to spend the week reducing our reliance on processed food/chemicals by making meals out of foods with as few already-combined ingredients as possible. Basically, with substitution magic, that means no baking powder, tofu, or chocolate. We've done the stir-fry thing quite a bit, and really all that we're having trouble ( Read more... )

what's wrong with baking powder? it's made of simple nontoxic water-soluble molecules. i assume you're still using baking soda, which is just one of three ingredients in baking powder.

breads don't have baking powder (especially if you make it yourself, just 3 ingredients), and is good for breakfast. bread recipes can be modified to be whole wheat, sweet (add fruit too), or anything you want.

anyhow, the easiest way to avoid those things is to make your dishes yourself with nothing but fresh veg and whole grains. beans and greens, roasted veg, baked potatoes, etc.

I am curiuos about this too. I have never heard of trying to avoid baking powder.

For breakfast or dessert, I would suggest soaked muesli. But even that I make with soy yogurt, so I don't know if you are avoiding that?Any way, you just mix the yogurt and muesli and let it sit overnight, then layer it with fruit like a trifle.

I am not sure what is wrong with tofu either, having made my own before... sure it is processed, but not more so than many things and it also only has 3 ingredients (water, soy beans, and a binding agent like calcium).

Or chocolate for that matter... my chocolate has 3 ingredients: cocoa solids, cocoa butter, vanilla and sugar (you may notice there are 4 ingredients in that list, but I count cocoa butter and cocoa solids as 1 since they are just different parts of the cocoa bean).

I can applaud the desire to reduce processed foods from one's diet... I just have to wonder about these particular choices.

Yeast risen pancakes? I haven't made them myself but they sound good.

Oh, and raw cakes + pies and such always look incredibly good, though again I've never made one myself... =P

I was just looking at making raw carrot cake. I was so excited. Unfortunately the two recipes I found both called for a dehydrator.

Both my friend and my housemate made this cake recently and it was AMAZING.

Yeah, my lack of a dehydrator and food processor is the main thing stopping me. But that pie looks AMAZING. I will have to visit my parents house and hijack their food processor on the weekend. xD
