Cheesecloth Substitutions?

Nov 23, 2008 12:55

Hey Guys, I'm making my pumpkin pie today, I'm making my own pumpkin puree.  But i need to strain it through cheesecloth before I bake it.  I don't think I have cheese cloth here.  Is there anything else I could use?  Maybe like a paper towel with a strainer or something?  Thanks guys!

Chux cleaning cloths are good for that sort of thing. I use them quite often. I am not sure if you have them in the US, but maybe you can find their equivelant. http://www.chux.com.au/content.aspx?id=2

If not, you can use stockings or a singlet top.

I agree with using a pair of nylons...they should be similar enough.

i usually just peel & chop a pumpkin, boil it, drain thru colander, and then puree it without straining. it's always worked for me...

Same here, though I'll usually take a potato masher to it after mixing it with the other filling ingredients for smoother consistency.

you'll find that this produces a puree that is much much thinner than that from a can. I would still advocate for draining. You can use any clean fabric, really. I've been known to use clothing.
