Grünkern salad

Grünkern is a lovely thing popular in the German-speaking world. It's spelt/farro that's been harvested young (thus the "green" in the name) and then smoked. If you have ready access to Grünkern, by all means use it for this (and send me a package, please, since I just used the last of mine). Another way to introduce a smoky flavour would be with a bit of Lapsang Souchong, I guess. Would a couple of black cardamom pods be out of place, I wonder, as another alternative? It sounds like they might work quite well...

I had that idea as well! The tea, not the cardamom. You could definitely try boiling the spelt in that to get the flavor. Black cardamom would be worth a try too!

I've never heard of Grünkern before, but that sounds lovely and your salad looks delicious, going to have to look out for some!
