Vroooom! Porridge

Feb 01, 2007 09:16

My husband used to dislike porridge [oatmeal].  Recently, he decided to give it another go, mainly because I'd made a(nother) Big Deal about how packed with energy, iron, and general body-friendly goodness it is.  I've created a version that he says that gives him lots of energy and keeps him full, and that he actually likes.  We eat a huge ( Read more... )

I'll do some more experimenting. For myself, I'd just chuck all sorts in - apple sauce, dessicated coconut, nuts, you name it. For Himself, though, you have to find the thing he likes, get him accustomed to it, and then introduce changes down the road. He's not a picky eater so much as an initially-picky eater.

If you ever make it just for yourself, try putting some tamarind extract in. It's really rather good.

I sometimes see them in the bulk bins of health food stores. Bulkfoods.com and The Baker's Catalog also sell them online.

I'm not so keen on the 1-minute oats. I prefer the old fashioned kind. They feel and taste like they've got all the right bits in them, if that makes sense.

I make a similar oatmeal every morning. I use quick oats (rolled oats take too long and require one extra dish to wash!), trial mix (raisins, dried cranberries, almonds, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, peanuts, dried apples and, most importantly, chocolate chips), a splash of rice milk, flax oil (or ground flax if I'm not lazy) and agave (if there isn't enough chocolate). My friend puts tahini in his oats for a creamy kick.

My doctor told me that green tea shouldn't be consumed with meals because it hinders iron absorption. I drink it in between meals instead.

I knew it worked that way with black tea, but not with green, so thanks for the tip :)

no, coffee leeches out tons of vitamins and minerals, including hindering iron absorption! it's really a caffeine problem. don't drink coffee with your breakfast if you're looking to absorb goodness.
