Alternatives to Bamboo Mat?

Jan 09, 2007 17:05

So, I'm in a pickle.
I have everything I need to make delicious sushi, but the grocery store I went to didn't sell bamboo mats. What could I use as an alternative to roll it?

I can second this. Wax-paper would do, as well.

you could always make a hand roll.

Alternatively, you could make hand rolls http://www.imakesushi.com/howto/hand-roll.html (apologies, pictures show sushi made with fish), which don't require a sushi mat.

maybe I'm a freak, but I HATE using the bamboo mat, I always just use my hands and it comes out just fine.

but I have big hands for a girl...

You know, I didn't get a matt until recently, I can roll fine, the small rolls with just my hands, dipped in water mixed with vinegar. Someone told me that tin foil was good, or a bendy piece of card paper.

Just make sure the rice is smooth, it takes a bit more patients to do it with your hands, like wrapping a present, take your time and make it even. It might be a bit lose on the ends, which is fun to nibble on, but it can work out fine, if you take your time.
