Yes, it's that time again - time for me to remind you that tagging your entries makes it easier for you and others to find information and recipes in the community. I've noticed more people tagging than ever there used to be, and to them I say a heartfelt "THANK YOU!" I've been away from the community for most of 3 weeks, and will be back to ( Read more... )

You need a mascot to promote tagging like the U.S. Post Office had Mr. Zip to push the use of zip codes.

Something I've been wondering - can we tag other people's entries , or is that not really encouraged? For that matter, if we tag an entry does the tag even appear to everyone, or just on our friends view?

My understanding - and I may be wrong about this! - is that mods/maintainers can tag all the entries, but members can only tag their own posts. As I say, I may be wrong (I am notoriously bad at grasping the subtleties of LJ), but I believe it's the case. Once a post is tagged, that tag is visible to anyone who reads the post.

nope, anyone can tag anyone's entries. and it's very encouraged. it's better to have all posts tagged even if it's slightly incorrect. the mods can always go back and remove an incorrect tag. but don't go overboard. just tag with a few tags, 5 or 6 tags at the most. unless of course there are alot of recipes in one post. that's when it's okay to add as many tags as needed.

(sorry so late to the party)

oh, also. only mods can create new tags. just scroll through the list and if you don't see a category, go ahead and contact a mod if you feel the tag needs to be created. typing it in will be fruitless. what you type will dissappear once you hit submit if the tag doesn't already exist.

(an easy way to find a tag is to go to the tag page or on the main page with the sidebar and use ctrl+F and type in the word you're looking for. sometimes it's an existing tag, but it's in a category different than you might expect. you'll get used to the tag categories eventually. :-)

thanks for asking. :-)
