Newbie here/ question about puff pastry

Apr 08, 2006 14:15

Hey everyone! I'm looking to veganize an amazing dessert I always used to get at a local restaurant. It was made up of puff pastry with ice cream and hot fudge sauce. I've got the hot fudge sauce all set (I used the recipe from The Vegan Chef website) and I'll use vanilla Tofutti... now all I need is the pastry. Does anyone have some good ideas?TIA

One of the key elements of puff pastry is butter, so I don't know if veganizing this recipe will actually work, but you could always use a frozen vegan pie crust or make one of your own. Veg.com has some recipes.

Yes, I use Earth Balance, but have found that it doesn't respond the same way that butter does in baking...particularly in things as delicate as filo. :-(

I think it's possible to find pre-made vegan puff pastry, too~

I think pepperidge farm may actually be - it's on the peta accidentally vegan list, so there's a good chance it is *actually* vegan.
I'd take a look around whole foods/wild oats type stores for frozen puff pastry, good luck!

Yeah, I've totally found frozen vegan puff pastry (although I live in Germany, so I dunno...). Try hippie food stores. I've never been to a Whole Foods, but from what I hear they might be a good source.

Whole Foods didn't carry it the last time I looked. I've been on this hunt before and came away empty handed. It's good to know that it's out there somewhere!

I'll check the brand next time I go to the store-- maybe then you can order it online!

from what I understand, Pepperidge Farms frozen puff pastry shells and sheets are vegan. and if I'm wrong about that, maybe you could use phyllo dough? Athens makes a frozen kind that is vegan.

A lot of frozen puff pastry available in ordinary supermarkets is vegan. Obviously, check each product carefully though!
